Text Box: The war on weight for many of us has been a lifelong struggle. My cousin Gerald can surely attest to this. So what finally motivated me to stop dieting, and yes change my lifestyle were three tragic family events that occurred in 2014. It began when we almost lost my Mom , Ronnie to the Lady Killer. Thank God she had a cardiologist who listened. Unlike the others she had been to, he did a catherization to find she needed triple bypass. For years they continued to diagnose her with asthma and COPD and prescribe more inhalers. She is recovering and continues to go to therapy. That was in June, later in August, I thought the back pain and indigestion I was having was from stress and eating crap. Only to find out after an emergency trip to the ER and again our wonderful cardiologist who immediately gave me a stress test that showed I needed surgery. Three stents and 2 heart attacks later, the Lady Killer had struck again. I thought that was enough but I would do something later to get in shape. But September 3th , my younger sister Debbie came to visit Mom and I for a few days. We had a great visit on Tuesday night, but Wednesday morning the Lady Killer Struck again. This time we had no warnings, she was gone.
Now I was mad, no I was pissed off. Who was this Lady Killer and why was he attacking my family ? I started researching Women’s Heart Disease and found out some alarming facts. I jumped into action and started walking in every walk in the Raleigh area I could sign up for. Mom couldn’t walk, but she could go be my cheerleader. Then added 3 days a week to the pool for Water Aerobics.
Next step was to find the nutritional program to start eating right and for us Italians, the hardest part. What no bread, sugar, coffee, pasta, I thought I should have just died in August. Happy to say to this date down 36 pounds and feeling fabulous. Lastly and most importantly was to get involved with the Women’s Heart Allliance and tell our story. I wanted others to know who the Lady Killer was and why he is so dangerous. In the next few months my sisters and I will be representing the Fight the Lady Killer initiative and telling our story of One out of three women taken.
It took the loss of my sister to put me on this path of a healthy lifestyle and now my new passion, getting the word out.
